Head's Blog: Culture

Dear Parents,
This week, I was wondering how much ‘culture’ our pupils were receiving both at school and at home. When was the last time you visited an Art Gallery? What about discussing a really interesting novel or work of literature? Visit the theatre? Listen to and discuss classical music? What do I mean by culture? I am talking about, ‘the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement’ as opposed to, ‘the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society’. I believe that if we understand ‘culture’ then we will value and learn from it and in turn we will care for it and enjoy it.
What I thought would be fun would be to collate some famous music and art that all pupils should be aware of and experience. I know that this is just a ‘taste’ and everyone will have their own opinion but I hope that it may prove to be a catalyst for all of us to explore many other areas of human achievement and discuss it with their children. I must admit I was impressed with the recent madness of Elon Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket and his latest exploration into space; it is people like him that can create change in the world…even with a Tesla sports car heading in the direction of Mars!
Creativity is one of the future skills that all our children will need.
