Part Time Science Technician

Brighton College Prep Handcross is seeking a qualified technician to support our Science Department. You will be required to work 20 hours a week, term time only. Start date is 27 August 2025.

Job purpose:

● To support the Science department with the set up of science experiments, ensuring all safety protocols are followed and safe storage of resources.

● To assist the Head of Department to develop an innovative approach to Science that will stimulate all pupils.

● To assist with the implementation of a curriculum across the Science Department and ensure the delivery of high quality provision in all curricular and extracurricular activities.

● To assist celebration of pupils’ work through effective displays throughout the department and around the school and regularly update displays/exhibitions.

● To help coordinate the resources of the Science Department. Designing opportunities that can be introduced to schemes of work for greater practical engagement.

● To maintain high levels of communication with department teachers.

Key Responsibilities:

● Equipment management: Science technicians are responsible for the maintenance, storage, and safe disposal of laboratory equipment and chemicals. They also ensure that equipment is accessible and in good condition.

● Teaching support: Science technicians help students and teachers with practical activities and demonstrations. They may also provide technical advice to teachers, and other adults involved in teaching and learning.

● Resource management: Science technicians order and maintain supplies, and may also source and suggest cost-effective alternatives. They may also keep up-to-date stock records. Creating and maintaining solutions during chemistry teaching.

● Health and safety: Science technicians ensure that they and others comply with Health and Safety legislation and guidance. They may also carry out risk assessments and respond to potential hazards.

● Collaboration: Science technicians work with other staff, technicians, and often pupils, and may liaise with teaching staff and support staff outside of their department.

● Professional development: Science technicians may want to develop management and leadership skills as they progress and ensure that all regulatory standards are kept up to date, including the minimum expectations of School iHASCO training.

Key experience:

Essential Criteria:

● Education (or equivalent certification) in relevant scientific subjects, including technical qualification.

● Previous experience in a school is desirable but not necessary

● Ability to demonstrate ‘Excellent’ Health and Safety awareness

● Previous experience of management and maintenance of resources.

● Confidence and enthusiasm to embrace technology to effectively enhance teaching and learning using technology

● Organised mindset and Effective management of responsibilities

● Professional and approachable to build effective relationships with pupils, staff and parents

● Desire to be part of an outstanding team

Promoting Safeguarding and welfare of children and young persons

● Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people for whom you are responsible, and with whom you come into contact.

● Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

● Be aware of, support and ensure equal opportunities for all.

● Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.

● Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.

● Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.

● Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.

This Job Description outlines the duties for the time being, to indicate the level of commitment and responsibilities expected. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are 'spent' unless they are 'protected' under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.

Hours of work: 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday (times to be agreed at interview), term time only.

Holidays: Paid Statutory Holiday Entitlement, (holidays to be taken during school holiday periods).

Salary: The annual salary, based on 20 hours per week during school term times, will include statutory holiday entitlement and one week's paid hours to attend all staff Inset days (5 annually). The salary is annualised and paid at the end of the calendar month in arrears. Holidays are expected to be taken during school holiday periods.

Other:

● During term time lunch is provided.

Head of Maintenance

Required to start as soon as possible.

This is a key position within Brighton College Prep Handcross.  The role demands flexibility and attention to detail together with energy and enthusiasm and the willingness to go the extra mile.  The Head of Maintenance role encompasses all aspects of site maintenance and requires a close working relationship with the Facilities Manager and Bursar.  The role requires supervision of the Facilities team.  A building trade is desirable but not essential.

Hours of work:

  • This is a 52-week a year, full-time position. The hours are 8.00am to 5.00pm with half hour unpaid lunch break.
  • In addition there may be a requirement to work a small number of evening and weekend commitments.
