International Pupils

Choosing a school for your child is such an important decision, especially if you reside outside of the UK and you are looking at British schools where the language and systems are unfamiliar.

Relocation

For families moving to the UK, we consider applications for any year group. Pupils can either take up a day place at any age or board with us from the age of 8.

Full Boarding

We offer full boarding from the age of 8 for international pupils with English language skills that allow them to access the curriculum.

International Language Programme (ILP)

For pupils requiring assistance with their English language skills and who show potential for their future studies, we offer the International Language Programme.

The International Language Programme is designed for children in Year 6 who have previously been educated overseas in their first language. It consists of a course of intensive English lessons throughout the year, which aims to provide pupils with the level of English they will need in order to integrate successfully into mainstream classes in Year 7. The programme covers the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and it involves close study of grammar as well as the acquisition of as wide a vocabulary as possible, especially the specialised vocabulary required by the broad range of subjects that they will be studying in Year 7. Pupils are also encouraged to read widely outside the classroom. In addition to English, pupils are taught Maths, History, Geography and Science together as a small group, whilst joining the rest of their year-group for non-academic subjects such as Sport, Computer Studies and The Arts.

For each of the above options, the process to apply for a place is the same.

Admissions Process Steps

Stage One: Enquiry

Enquiring with us is the first stage of the admission process. To make your initial enquiry please contact Lisa Taylor on +44 1444 400526 and choose option 1, email [email protected] or complete an online enquiry form.  Following your enquiry, we will send you an information pack via email. Although it may not be possible, you are very welcome to come and visit the school. You may be able to attend one of our Open Mornings or we can arrange a personal tour of the school and meeting with the Headmaster, Mr Richard Brown. If you are not confident in speaking English, you are welcome to bring an interpreter or agent with you.

Stage Two: Registering

Registering your child is the next stage of the admissions process. Please complete the registration form as soon as possible. This will enable us to start the application process for a place in the required year group, although it is not a guarantee of a place. You can register and pay the registration fee online. Once both the completed registration form and payment have been received, your application will be processed.

Stage Three: Assessment and Taster Day

If at all possible, we would love to meet your child. If you are planning a visit to the UK, we may be able to arrange a Taster Day and/or Evening. During this time, we can carry out some informal assessments in Maths, English, and Non-Verbal Reasoning and your child can experience life at Handcross Park. If you reside outside of the UK and a visit is not possible, we can arrange an interview via Skype. This will enable us to get to know your child and discover whether Handcross Park is the right school for them. We can arrange for assessments to be sent directly to the British Council nearest to your place of residence. All we ask is that you arrange a suitable time and date for these to happen.

Stage Four: Admission

Your child will be offered a place on the basis of a successful Assessment and/or Taster Day. Parents are asked to complete an Acceptance Form based on our Terms and Conditions to confirm acceptance of a place. At this time, parents are also requested to pay a deposit to guarantee the place. This deposit is refundable when your child leaves the school. Welcome and joining packs will be sent in the term before your child starts at Handcross Park. You may also be invited to join us for any relevant information meetings.
